What Are You Missing?

COULD IT BE POSSIBLE THAT YOUR BODY IS MISSING SOMETHING THAT ALLOWS YOU TO GET SICK OR PREVENTS YOU FROM GETTING WELL? What if it was something that was as simple as a food nutrient? Can a food nutrient keep you from getting sick or if added to your diet, facilitate healing? Not possible you say? Well let’s go back in history.

TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY YEARS AGO international power was dependent on the relative strengths of navies. When sailors were at sea for a prolonged period of time they often developed progressive bodily weakness, spongy and inflamed gums, loose teeth, swollen and tender joints, and a tendency toward ecchymosis secondary to ruptured blood vessels. Anemia often developed as a result of this loss of blood. Eventually death was the final result of this condition. At the time it was not known why these conditions developed, but it was obviously a serious consideration when developing a military strategy. This condition later became known as SCURVY.

IN 1753, it was discovered that the consumption of citrus fruits, such as lemons and limes, not only cured scurvy but also prevented its recurrence. Henceforth, the British navy supplemented sailors' diets with limes and other citrus fruits and, consequently, British sailors became known as 'Limeys'. Two hundred years later the missing ingredient was identified as vitamin C.

Both Beriberi and Pellagra are also conditions that are a direct result of deficiencies of essential nutrients. Are there others?
